Does calligraphy need to be legible? This was one of the questions I asked myself over the last few years. Calligraphy has a special place in the arts, because it's original function was to transport information. Today however, we are less bound by the conventions of the past and calligraphy has in parts become much more abstract as an artform. The brush as a tool is extremely malleable and allows for a wide variety of forms. Combining the shapes of letters in new ways can lead to dense and abstract patterns that draw viewers in. The bristles of the brush sometimes carrying more or less paint stretch with time and open up negative spaces in the stroke. Wearing abstract writing, or art in general, is a special thing. People can directly engage with the work and a discussion about the topic is never far away. It's a stark difference to pieces in a sketchbook or a gallery that only a few select people at best can see. Let's put more calligraphy into this world, whether it be on clothes, paper, digital or walls.

The T-Shirt was launched on my Webstore and advertised on my instagram with memes and a 3D animation. Viewers could vote which colourway would go into production.
